How to Make Curtains
Posted on | 2015-03-20Making curtains can be a really fun and easy project, however there is a bit more to it than just sewing a seam on each side of the material, and a hem on the bottom. Once you have the right measurements, you can do quite a bit to create just the right window treatments.
Depending on your sewing capabilities, you may choose to use one material with a scarf or decorative tieback alone. However, if you’re a little more advanced, you could add ruffles, lace and edging that takes them up a notch. A pattern is not necessarily required if you have measured at least two or three inches on either side of the window.
When you do start sewing the material pieces, try to keep your stitches as invisible as possible. If they’re visible, it will only take away from the overall appearance. Instead, use a blind stitch or choose a thread that blends in perfectly. Be careful here, too, because depending on the thickness of the material, you may need to change the tension on your machine as well. Certain delicate materials will not be able to handle a heavy stitch.
Account for the side of the rod the curtains will be hanging on. You can choose to either sew a large tube to slide over the rod, or sew loops on top of the sheet. This decision can be made after you’ve seen how each style looks in various examples. Sewing curtains is fun and lets you put your own decorative spin on the room.
